It was 25 years ago that the first .uk domain was registered. As it was registered before the formation of Nominet (the not for profit organisation that oversees .uk domain registrations) nobody knows what the domain name was and who registered it.
Despite being 25 years old, .uk domains are still be registered in record numbers. There was an 11.5% growth in the number of domains registered last year and this year is set to see 2 million new .uk domains registered.
So it’s as important as ever to make sure you get the domain name you want registered as soon as you can.
What Nominet are planning to do is release a number of one and two letter .uk domain names into the public domain and providing you have the property right over the name (ie. it’s been your company name since 1st January 2008), you can apply to register for it from December 1st 2010.
There have been two letter .com domains for a while (aa.com, u2.com etc.) but it’s not been available in the UK before.
After companies that are eligible for the domains have been processed, there’ll be an open application process for any remaining doamin names (I assume all the one-letter domains will be gone by this point) but more details about this will come later.
If anyone wants help with applying when the new domains become available, please get in touch.
